He supported the Lancastrians in the War Of The Roses, In fact he served as the commander in chief of the Lancastrian forces and was seriously wounded, at the First Battle of St. Albans in1455 but died five years later on July 10 1460 in the Battle of Northampton. Interred: Grey Friars Monastery Northampton Note: There was some historical confusion concerning the time and place of Duke Humphrey's death. The problem started with William Shakespeare (1564-1616) when he wrote his play Henry VI. In the play Shakespeare implied that both Duke Humphrey Stafford and his son Lord Humphrey II Stafford the 7th Earl of Stafford were killed at the first battle of Saint Albans in 1455. In fact they were both seriously wounded, thus they were battle casualties but not battle fatalities. This error by Shakespeare misled the famous historian William Dugdale (1605- 1686) a great fan of William Shakespeare. The errors by Shakespeare and Dugdale have misled many genealogists for years, and their errors have resulted in many erroneous family trees around the world still widely posted on the Internet. Anne Neville (1411-1480) daughter of Ralph Neville, 1st Earl of Westmoreland & Joan Beaufort The family of Ralph Neville was one of the most powerful in England and shared domination of the northern counties with the Percy family, with whom the Nevilles were at times closely allied. Neville succeeded his father as Baron Neville of Raby in 1388 and supported Richard II against the baronial party. In 1397 he was created earl of Westmorland. His second wife was Joan Beaufort, daughter of John of Gaunt and half sister of Henry of Lancaster (later Henry IV). When, in 1399, Henry revolted against Richard, Westmorland supported Lancaster. He continued to support Henry as king and helped to put down the Percy revolt in 1403. When a new anti- Lancastrian revolt broke out in 1405, Westmorland captured two of the leaders, Archbishop Richard Le Scrope and the earl marshal of England, by trickery, but he had nothing to do with their quick execution. He was the father of a large family, many of whom made advantageous marriages. His daughter Cecily Neville married Richard, duke of York, and became the mother of Edward IV and Richard III; another of his grandsons was Richard Neville, earl of Warwick, called the Kingmaker. Joan Beaufort's mother Catherine Swynford Roet was the sister-in-law of Geofrey Chaucer the poet. Catherine was a mistress of John of Gaunt. |

Henry Stafford 2nd Duke of Buckingham Constable of England Born: Sept. 4, 1455 Abergavenny, Monmouth, Wales Acceded: July 10, 1460 Married: 1466 Died: Nov. 2, 1483, executed at Salisbury, Wiltshire, England for Treason By King Richard III. (Henry was a 2nd cousin of King Henry VII Tudor.) Henry was not quite 6 years old when he became the Duke of Buckingham following the death of his grandfather at the battle of Northampton in 1460. Normally the Dukedom would have gone to Henry's father Lord Humphrey but Henry's father had died from the plague two years earlier. Typically when a mere youngster assumed a high position of nobility within a kingdom a King would appoint someone to be a guardian for the child and the child became a ward of the guardian. In Henry's case this proved to be a disaster, King Edward IV (Plantagenet) appointed his controversial wife to be young Henry Stafford's guardian Queen Elizabeth Woodville(Wydville)was controversial because she was a commoner, the Plantagenet family was upset because she added no financial or social strength to Edward's hold on the throne. |
It is said young Henry hated the Queen for a
variety of reasons: He was forced by Queen Elizabeth Woodville to marry the Queen's little 8 year old sister Katherine when he was only 10 years old. The Queen desperately wanted this marriage to get more wealth into the hands of her Woodville family. This was doubly irritating to him because he didn't like little Katherine and he was aware of his noble position and resented being mated with a poor commoner. This match weakened him both financially and politically. He was forced to spend an inordinate amount of time with the women of the court involved in feminine pastimes while young Henry wanted to train to be a knight along with other young men of the court, an activity more suited to his presumed future in life.Queen Elizabeth sided with the powerful Bohun family (for political reasons) who were contending that much of young Henry's inheritance should go to them, recall that Anne Plantagenet of Woodstock's mother was Eleanor Bohun. TheWoodville family had designs on the throne of England and needed the support of the Bohun family.Henry was of royal descent through his father and mother, both were descendents of King Edward III. Thus, He Had a strong claim to the throne of England after the death of King Edward IV but instead he supported Richard of Gloucester, Who became King Richard III. (Noted in Shakespeare's Play)Henry was beheaded for treason because he later rebelled against King Richard III. Why Henry rebelled against Richard is one of the great mysteries of English history. Henry led the movement to have Richard crowned, and served as the master of ceremonies at Richard's coronation. As a reward for this support, Richard made Henry one of the richest and most powerful persons in England at the time. Unfortunately for Edward he had a very powerful
enemy, Cardinal Thomas Wolsey, the Lord Chancellor of England Edward was
the spokesman for a large group of nobles who complained about the immense
amount of power Wolsey had usurped within the kingdom. Wolsey was literally
dictating the king's foreign and domestic policies, and spending a fortune
in the process, while exacting crushing taxes. The cunning Wolsey convinced King Henry VIII, that Edward Stafford was plotting to overthrow Henry and claim title to the throne. Wolsey claimed as proof that there was a fortuneteller wandering about England at the time predicting that the name of the next king of England would be Edward. Henry was angry because the Duke didn't kill the fortuneteller. Henry also lusted after Edward Stafford's vast wealth and estates, which were among the finest in England. The greedy King Henry confiscated all of Edward Stafford's vast wealth and estates for his own personal use. Then he had the innocent Duke beheaded. He then gave some of the Duke's wealth to Mary and Anne Boleyn's father, Thomas Boleyn as payment for sexual services rendered Henry especially wanted Thornbury Castle upon which Edward commenced construction in 1511 Note: (Henry VIII lived there with Anne Boleyn in 1535) Mary Tudor lived in the extravagant Thornbury Castle/Palace as a princess. And when Mary became Queen she returned the castle to the descendants of Edward Stafford. King Henry VIII judicially murdered Margaret
Plantagenet Pole when she was 72 years old in an extremely barbaric manner
for religious reasons, Henry murdered Margaret due to his hatred for her
son, Cardinal Reginald Pole. Over a period of years, the psychopathic members of the Tudor family murdered all members of the Plantagenet family who might make a claim on the Throne. Because the Plantagenets had a better claim to the throne of England than the Tudors. Margaret's Stafford family ancestors were next in line to the throne. Because of his intense hatred of Cardinal Reginald Pole King Henry VIII swore that he would destroy all members of the Pole family and certainly all of Margaret's descendents; Especially those named Stafford whose ancestral claim to the throne was abundantly clear, Ursula was safe during Henry's reign, because It was assumed at the time that only a male could accede to the throne. For the same reason Lady Dorothy Stafford was spared. However, when Queen Mary Tudor took the throne it was recognized that females could also claim the throne based on their pedigree, this meant that even Lady Dorothy was in danger, so Dorothy and her husband Sir William Stafford with their children fled into exile in Geneva, Switzerland. Henry and Ursula had 13 children, below is a list of 9 of them. (4 daughters
who died prior to being christened thus, unnamed are not included on the

Sir William Stafford (1512-1556) ( a distant cousin) William could trace his ancestry back to Millicent de Stafford (1155-1214) and Hervy Bagot Stafford, as did Dorothy. Born: circa 1512 in Blatherwick, Northamptonshire, England. William was the second of at least 3 sons of Sir Humphrey Stafford of Repton, Derbyshire, England and Margaret Fogge who was born in 1463 of Repton, Derbyshire, England (a daughter of Sir John Fogge of Ashford, Kent, England and Margaret Goldwell who in turn was the daughter of Jeffrey Goldwell, who was born in 1437 of Repton, Derbyshire, England. Knighted in Scotland: 9/23/1545 by Edward Seymour the Earl of Hertford, Duke of Somerset and Protector of England who oversaw young King Edward VI Tudor. William was present at the coronation of Anne Boleyn, at the time he functioned as a mere servitor at the court. Later he functioned As a knight in the personal guard of King Henry VIII. 2 Marriages: William's first wife was Mary Boleyn, together they had a baby girl, who died before she was named in 1534, thus there are no Stafford descendents from Mary Boleyn, she is not technically a member of the progenitor Stafford family tree, just a footnote in its history. William and Dorothy were married 2 years after the death of Mary Boleyn. Note: William was Mary's second husband, her first husband was William Carey who died in 1528 |
